Chester County Sheriff's SRO has alerted administration of a social media and texting trend that could pose security issues for students and their families.

The trend is called "number neighbors," where people are encouraged to call or text people whose phone number is one digit different. For example, if a person's last four digits of their phone number are 5555, their "number neighbors" would be 5554 and 5556.

This practice could be dangerous, since students would be revealing their phone numbers to strangers, and have no idea how the other person might interpret the communication or what they might plan to do with the information.

Chester County Sheriff's SRO encourage parents to talk to their children about responsible use of their phones and the internet and how to keep their information private. They also encourage parents to monitor their children's use of texting and social media.
